Candida
Candida albicans is a type of yeast fungus that naturally lives in our bodies in small amounts without posing a threat. However, excessive growth of candida can lead to a fungal infection called candidiasis. Normally, the healthy bacteria in our digestive system prevent candida overgrowth, but if our immune system is weakened, we take antibiotics, steroids, consume alcohol or stimulants, or have a poor diet, candida can multiply. A diet high in simple sugars like sweets, wheat products, white rice, potatoes, and fruit can also promote candida growth.
Antifungal drugs are typically used to treat candidiasis, but these can cause negative side effects and candida can quickly become resistant. Instead, natural remedies like diet, supplements, and herbs are recommended. Herbs like tansy, pau d'arco, oregano, olive leaf, celandine, pomegranate peel, walnut, vilcacora, echinacea, and sage contain antimicrobial compounds that can fight candida. Supplements like caprylic acid can also be effective. However, proper diet is also essential for treating candida, as a low-sugar, low-glycemic index diet can help starve candida cells. Foods like sugar, sweets, alcohol, processed products, fermented products, white bread, white rice, potatoes, and certain fruits should be avoided.
